In Nigeria, it is believed that an estimated 20 percent to 30 percent of our population suffer from mental disorders. This is a very significant number considering Nigeria has an estimated population of over 200 million.” Worst still, mental health disorders are beginning to flourish at the workplace.

Mental Health physician and psychotherapist Maymunah Kadiri said recent statistics have revealed that many Nigerians suffer from mental health disorder and high blood pressure arising from stress at the workplace. According to her workplace stress is a primary trigger for mental health disorder. It is a significant factor that may affect organizational performance.

Kadiri listed things that can trigger stress at the workplace to include: role conflict and uncertainty, expressed in different ways such as lack of performance feedback, uncertainty about desirable behavior (role ambiguity), and uncertainty about the future (job insecurity).

According to a consultant psychiatrist, Dr. Yewande Oshodi, the reason for mental disorders is not far- fetched due to the rapid growth of globalization and the need for staff to meet up with the demands of their employers. Some of the signs of mental health disorder in the workplace include.

  • long-standing sadness or irritability
  • Extremely high and low moods
  • Excessive fear, worry, or anxiety
  • Social withdrawal

Organizations should look at implementing initiatives around policy creation, communication, training resources, and early-intervention treatment: This can include creating policies and mandates around mental health at a corporate level; sharing resources through internal marketing channels to promote awareness; giving management and HR the training to identify issues and handle them successfully; and providing employees with self-help tools and programs.

More than ever before, digital technology is playing a crucial role in the treatment of mental illness, opening up ways for people to access treatment well when face-to-face talk therapy and medication weren’t readily available. Investing in mental health initiatives for leaders and employees of an organization can help in several ways.
