Tell us about yourself and the leadership role you occupy.
My name is Chinwe Ama-Boms, an Engineer with 18+ years in the OCTG services sector of the Oil & Gas industry. I currently serve as the Plant Manager at Bell Oil & Gas Limited. In this role, I provide strategic leadership to the team, ensuring that we consistently deliver world-class services to our clients while upholding the company’s core values. Beyond processes and performance, my passion is developing people and helping them realise their potential.
What’s the most important lesson you’ve learned as a leader?
The greatest lesson for me has been that leadership is about service. It’s not all about being in front or having all the answers, but about asking the right questions and empowering others to find solutions. It is about creating an environment where others can excel. When you focus on people and purpose, results naturally follow.
How do you balance leading a team with your other responsibilities?
Balance comes from trust and empowerment. Identify the few things that truly move the needle, making it a priority to delegate responsibilities, while providing guidance and support where needed. This allows me to stay focused on the bigger picture without losing touch with day-to-day realities.
What leadership qualities do you value most?
Integrity, empathy, and resilience. Integrity because without trust, leadership collapses. Empathy because people are at the heart of everything we do. And resilience because the oil and gas industry is full of challenges that require strength and adaptability.
How do you make tough decisions?
I approach tough decisions with a combination of facts, values, and courage. I take time to gather diverse perspectives and weigh both short-term and long-term implications, but ultimately, I ask: Does this align with Bell Oil & Gas’ mission and values? That clarity gives me confidence to make decisions—even when they’re not easy.
If you could give your younger self one piece of leadership advice, what would it be?
Growth comes from stepping outside your comfort zone, and mistakes are part of the journey—not the end of it. The earlier you embrace challenges and risks, the faster you’ll grow.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve faced as a leader?
Navigating uncertainty—especially when people look to you for clarity in challenging times. Balancing transparency with reassurance has been one of the most delicate but rewarding challenges.
What excites you most about the future of BOG and the industry?
What excites me the most in one word will be “leadership focus”. We have a management with eagle-eye focus on the delivery of world-class services across the organisation. This is driven down the entire organisational structure. I’m excited about the opportunities ahead, especially as Nigeria deepens its focus on local content and innovation. Bell Oil & Gas has built a strong reputation as a trusted indigenous company, and I see us leading the charge in driving sustainable growth, technology adoption, and skills development in the industry.
How do you handle failure or setbacks in leadership?
By treating them as learning opportunities. I take time to reflect on what went wrong, extract lessons, and then refocus the team on moving forward stronger.
