Fifteen Years With BOG

When did you join BOG?
I joined BOG on the 15th of November 2010.
What do you remember about your first day?
It was the first day in three years that I went to work without a driver and a car. I had left a job that provided me with free accommodation at a fully furnished 3-bedroom serviced apartment in VGC with a brand-new car and driver for a job that offered none of these perks. As I sat in the shared open plan office, leaving behind my previous private office, I asked myself if I was making the right decision, yet convinced that I was on the right track. That proved true over time. So, it was a day filled with mixed feelings and anticipation of what lay ahead.
What are your career ambitions, and what steps have you taken to accomplish those goals?
Over the course of my 15 years at BOG, I have seen my dedication and commitment rewarded. My career ambition is to progress to the top of the corporate ladder as a C-suite executive. To acquire the skills necessary to function effectively in this capacity with professionalism, I enrolled in the Harvard Business School’s Executive Program in Boston, Massachusetts. It was a world-class learning experience with premium amenities, stimulating classes led by faculty who were experts in their fields, with topics that will define the future of business. I feel energised to build businesses and be a changemaker in our industry and the world.
How has the company contributed to your development in the last 15 years?
I came to BOG with some knowledge of supply chain management and a stint in sales in the downstream sector of the oil and gas industry. Over the years, the company has helped to improve my depth of knowledge in supply chain and given me a breadth of knowledge in Sales, tendering and project management in a comparatively well-structured organisation. I have been privileged to participate in several conferences and technical meetings with OEMs in and outside Nigeria. I have learnt through interaction with and training by renowned International OEMs, and technical partners.
I have moved from being an individual contributor to leading and building teams, mentoring and strategic thinking. The skills and knowledge that I have gained are priceless, and I have become a globally competitive employee. I’m deeply grateful for that.
What are your most notable accomplishments over the years?
I’ve had innumerable accomplishments with BOG. I remember working on the commercials for an OCTG bid for Addax Petroleum until I entered the delivery room in 2011. We won that bid and several multi-million-dollar POs for OCTG from Addax. I got the award for ‘Manager of the Year 2012’ (first and only time an assistant manager would get this award). It was such a great delight to secure the awards for Shell Kolo Creek to Soku project linepipes from Nestoil, Chevron Dibi North linepipes, NLNLG Train 7 Project GRV Pipes and SNEPCO Bonga North EPC-2 linepipes, amongst others. I enjoy working on high-value prospects, especially OCTG and linepipes. The quotation dynamics are different. I developed well-curated error-proof templates for quotations, and I enjoy dealing with numbers because I have an analytical mind. Being entrusted with the company’s most valuable asset – its relationship with customers as GM for Business Development is a huge responsibility that has transformed me in many ways.
What are some of your fondest memories over the past 15 years?
Oh, BOG was such a fun place with more employees than we have now, and we used to have a canteen with subsidised meals for all staff. I enjoyed the time we spent having lunch together at the canteen. It is still a fun place, but sometimes, I miss my supply chain team members who are no longer with us. We formed such a strong bond. Our Christmas parties were also fun and getting better. The management retreat with Fela Durotoye is one event that impacted me greatly, and I look forward to future external retreats.
Who do you admire most at BOG? Tell us why.
The person I admire most is the CEO. He taught me to pay attention to detail, made me develop a passion for OCTG and linepipes, to be interested in every aspect and function of the organisation and to work as if I own the business. His brilliant mind, drive, and work ethic are admirable. He spotted my talent and honed it, pushing me beyond limits, demanding excellence and proactiveness in every assignment, in every way possible. He has been my mentor and advocate over the years.

Our suite of products and services is so unique that when salespeople come in, they get so much to learn, and they are empowered to earn much more by the time they leave. In the supply chain, we have processes, templates and resources for developing excellent supply chain specialists for those who apply themselves.
Any other information you might want to share?
I’m grateful for the last 15 years, and I know that the future is diamonds!
Overall, how would you describe your experience in the last 15 years?
It’s been a period of learning, growth, successes, shared commitment and weathering storms together.
