At Bell Oil & Gas, our people remain our greatest asset, and we continue to invest intentionally in their growth, safety, and professional development. In line with this commitment, two members of our Transport Team, Nanven Abraham and Billiamin Alarape, have successfully completed an intensive SPY Police Training programme. They are the latest drivers to be sponsored by the company for this specialised training, which forms part of our structured approach to capacity building and people development.
The SPY refers to Supernumerary (SPY) Police Officers in Nigeria, who are private individuals trained by the Nigerian Police Force to provide security for their employers, such as companies, banks, and government agencies. They are hired and paid by these organisations, not the police, but are overseen by the Nigeria Police Force. The training programme is designed to expose participants to real-life security scenarios, ensuring they are better prepared to identify risks, make quick decisions, and maintain composure under pressure. For drivers who regularly navigate challenging terrains and diverse operational environments, acquiring these competencies is crucial to ensuring both personal and organisational safety.
As frontline team members who often represent the first and last point of contact in our daily operations, the enhanced capabilities of our drivers translate directly to smoother logistics, safer commutes, and improved response to unexpected situations on the road. The programme offered a broad range of modules tailored to improving both technical and behavioural skills. Key areas covered include:
- Advanced Defensive Driving: Techniques for anticipating hazards, avoiding collisions, and manoeuvring safely in high-pressure situations.
- Threat Detection & Situational Awareness: Identifying suspicious behaviour, assessing risk levels, and responding appropriately.
- Basic Security Intelligence: Understanding security patterns, reporting mechanisms, and operational protocols needed in sensitive environments.
- Conflict Management & De-escalation: Handling confrontational situations calmly while ensuring the safety of passengers and assets.
- Emergency Response: Best practices for managing unexpected events, including medical emergencies, road blockages, or security disturbances.
We believe that every role contributes significantly to our success, and investing in employee capacity building remains a core pillar of our people strategy. This training is not just a professional certification; it is a reaffirmation of our commitment to nurturing competent, confident, and well-equipped team members.
By availing our staff of learning opportunities such as this, BOG continues to strengthen its QHSE (Quality, Health, Safety, and Environment) culture, ensuring that our workforce is always prepared to deliver at world-class standards.
The two drivers demonstrated exceptional dedication throughout the programme, balancing the rigors of training with their responsibilities back at work. Their achievement reflects not only personal ambition but also a strong desire to contribute meaningfully to the organization’s security and safety objectives.
