BOG Engineers complete installation of Ingersoll Rand HPM (Hybrid Permanent Magnet ) Motor at CHI Limited

The BOG RE Team installed a Hybrid Permanent Magnet(HPM)Motor on an Ingersoll Rand Nirvana compressor at CHI limited. It was one of the most intriguing and demanding projects executed by the team because it required a truckload of preciseness.

The project began with the removal of the old rotor from the shaft of the compressor’s air-end with the use of a unique tool called rotor bolt. After this process, the air end shaft was carefully examined to ensure that it is clean and devoid of contaminants that may affect the smooth running of the new motor installed.

The BOG RE team proceeded to mount the new HPM motor using specially designed and fabricated tools. The project was not just about mounting and coupling of the motor, just like installing an ordinary induction motor. The HPM motor consists of stationary and rotary parts. Both parts must not touch each other during operation to avoid failure of the whole motor.

After mounting the new motor, the team proceeded to the alignment stage, which involves the use of torque wrench, the stator remover, and shims needed to ensure there is an even clearance between the stator and the rotor. This technique is to ensure that the stator and the rotor do not touch each other during operation. The clearance between the stator and the motor is called Airgap. This Airgap must be uniform across the motor’s circumference and the minimum required air gap is 0.7mm, which is often measured through the help of a filler gauge.

The final stage of this project was the installation of all the motor covers and the connection of all the cables to their respective terminals on the control panel of the compressor.

Indeed, a very challenging task. However, the”can-and-will-do” attitude of the BOG RE team made the project an outstanding success that made our clients very happy.

The Ingersoll Rand Nirvana oil-free compressor is known to provide unparalleled energy efficiency at all speeds along with terrific reliability. BOG is a partner to Ingersoll Rand for the oil and gas industry as well as general industries in Nigeria.
